'Mother of the Corn'

Celestial bodies encircle one another, their attraction undeniable. The cool blue moon smiles seductively as she embraces a fiery sun. Kawuyomaire, the blue deer, adorns a beadwork moon with his glowing face. A corn plant thrusts green stalks toward the sun, centering this colorful work. Six-sided peyote flowers, or jikuri, appear in precise symmetry, and Teruka, the scorpion adorns both. He is the guardian of the corn and must receive gifts before the harvest. "The moon, or metza moves the waters to produce rain to feed our corn," they explain. "The shamans, represented as deer heads, are singing to the power of the scorpion, showing their gratitude to the flowers that symbolize our ancestors." Huichol artisans portrays the revered symbols on a hand-crafted eclipse mask.
